Surrounded by a deep moat and perched on a high mound, the huge circular keep of this castle, built at the turn of the 14th century, survives in good condition. Built as a symbol of wealth and status and once home to Edward, the Black Prince, it offers splendid views over the surrounding countryside. It's also a marvellous picnic spot and is in the care of English Heritage.
The castle and grounds are now a peaceful and beautiful place to enjoy a walk, take in the stunning views and maybe a picnic looking out over what was originally a large deer park. In spring, primroses and daffodils cover the mound, rhododendrons flower in summer and the surrounding woodland is home to the "Black Pheasant" - see if you can spot him in autumn. The grounds are also a great place for children to let off steam.
One of the best features of the castle is the wall walk around the inside of the keep - climb up the stone staircase from the courtyard and you will be rewarded with stunning countryside views. Built to protect against attackers, you can now enjoy the circular walk around the high keep walls - you can almost imagine castle life bustling below you centuries ago.
